For the third time in less than a week, the Pioneer softball team turned an afternoon into two victories after the Pioneers swept host Huron on Monday for the purple and white’s third consecutive sweep.
They certainly brought the bats across town for the showdown with the River Rats.
In the opener, Pioneer took the lead to stay in the fourth inning to capture a back-and-forth game 13-8. Both offenses were strong at the plate as Pioneer led the battle collecting 16 hits.
Pioneer took the lead in the fourth when Mimi Maixner doubled to drive in two runs. Maixner earned the win for Pioneer. She went seven innings, surrendering eight runs, 12 hits and striking out four.
Maixner, Franny Schulenberg, Taryn Curtis, Olivia Gregory and Lizzie Kuras each collected multiple hits for Pioneer. Maixner and Schulenberg led the visitors with three hits apiece.
Celia Kent, Shelby Harris, Lexi Specht, Kara Wilson and Dani DiGiovine each collected multiple hits for Huron. DiGiovine went 2-for-4 at the plate as she led the team with four RBI.
Pioneer captured the second game and sweep of the double header with an 8-4 win despite giving up three runs in the first inning.
After Pioneer scored one run in the top of the fourth, Huron answered with one of their own. Pioneer scored when Franny Schulenberg singled driving in one run.
Maixner earned the win for Pioneer. She pitched seven innings, surrendering four runs, nine hits, striking out five and walking one.
Pioneer collected eight hits.
Schulenberg and Lizzie Kuras each collected multiple hits for Pioneer. Natalie Marr led the team with three walks.
Huron had nine hits in the game. Karli Messer, Grace Kent and Micah Higa each collected multiple hits for the River Rats.
