Ann Arbor YMCA Offers Free Safety Around Water Classes to the Public This Summer

The world is 71 percent water, and children are 100 percent curious: help keep them safe.

Safety Around Water: A Free Learn to Swim Program will teach kids and families in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti how to be safer in and around the water including pool, boating, beach, water park safety, and stroke development. In Ann Arbor, the classes for children aged 6 months to 12 years will be held at the Ann Arbor YMCA, 400 West Washington Street, Ann Arbor 48103, June 19-23. Registration is open. Children under 3 years of age must be accompanied by a parent/guardian in the water.

Classes for children aged 5-12 will be held in July and August at four McKinley properties,Monday through Thursday, 1-2 pm except as noted:

— Schooner Cove Apartments 5050 Schooner Cove Blvd, Ypsilanti, MI 48197 (July 7-August 25, 1-2 pm) *note: classes at Schooner Cove will be held on 8 consecutive Fridays

— Glencoe Hills Apartments 2201 Glencoe Hills Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48108 (July 10-20)

— Golfside Lake Apartments 2345 Woodridge Way, Ypsilanti , MI 48197 (July 24-August 3)

Kids from low income households have accidental drowning rates three times higher than that of their higher-income peers. In many of these families, the parents also do not know how to swim. In this case, they are often reluctant to let their kids play in or around a pool, even though it is in their own backyard. The Safety Around Water program provides information and teaching skills for the parents as well so that the whole family can begin to feel comfortable and at ease with this essential life skill. Swimming can be an excellent component of a healthy and active life-style: hopefully the Safety Around Water Program will encourage families to get outside and get in the pool!

In 2016 the Y was able to teach 640 children through this program, keeping them, and their families safe around water.
