Tennis: Pioneer, Skyline net spots in D-1 state finals

Canton hosted the Region 3 Division 1 tennis tournament on the Thursday and the short drive was well worth the trip for two Ann Arbor schools. As expected Pioneer dominated the day as the Pioneers won all four singles matches and reached the finals in all four doubles matches to run away with first place.

Skyline netted an impressive second place in the competitive 10-team field. The Eagles reached the finals in all four doubles events, winning three of them.

The D-1 state finals are June 2-3 at the Greater Midland Tennis Center.

The Pioneer winners in singles were Kari Miller at one singles, Kara Dickinson at two, Emily Roopas at three and Meg Goldberg at four. Miller defeated Jessica Braun of Plymouth in the championship match.

The Pioneer duo of Nikita Abbaraju and Riley Dickinson took first place at two doubles.

Pioneer runner-ups in doubles were Hadley Huffman and Sophie Alphonso at one; Emily Jiang and Haruka Tanaka at three; and Athena Alcock and Gina Liu at four.

Skyline’s duo of Caroline Courtright and Tara Shetty were champions at one doubles. Anna Dang and Arie Park took first at three doubles and Emma Reel and Gariella Teodoru won at four doubles for the Eagles.

Skyline’s Suki Mandair (one), Caroline Norton (two), Krystal Kao (three) and Tejal Patel (four) all played singles for the Eagles and will compete at the state finals.
