Stephen West is returning to The Encore on June 8 in The Encore’s production of Camelot. If you’ve never seen Stephen in action, you owe it to yourself to buy a ticket to this latest show featuring the operatic bass-baritone of a truly passionate performer who has a blast every night and radiates enthusiasm and chemistry to and with all those both on stage and in the audience at all times.
How could it possibly get any better, you’re asking?
Well I’m glad you asked, because the answer is that West is playing King Arthur as constructed from The Once and Future King by T.H. White. The Encore’s Casting Director Thalia Schramm couldn’t have done any better short of somehow tracking down King Arthur himself from legend and plunking him onto the stage.
West and the rest of the cast will belt out enchanting medieval melodies from Lerner and Loewe, two titans of American Musical Theatre. Olivia Aletha Davis is Guenevere to West’s Arthur, ruling the land with chivalry and justice for the sake of peace, but not even Stephen West can change the fate of the City Upon The Hill once David Moan’s Sir Lancelot comes trotting past the palisade.
First performed in 1960 at Broadway’s Majestic Theater and featuring Richard Burton, Julie Andrews and Robert Goulet, ‘Camelot’ brims with pageantry, splendor and favorite songs such as “If Ever I Would Leave You.”
Daniel C. Cooney is taking the directing lead with a strong cast led by West, who previously appeared in The Encore’s “Fiddler On The Roof”, “Les Miserables,” and “South Pacific.” West has performed at the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, New York City Opera and Lyric Opera of Chicago, among many others.
He has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Philadelphia and Cleveland orchestras in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Tanglewood, and the Hollywood Bowl.
He is currently a Professor of Music and Chair of the Voice Department in the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance. Stephen has starred in over thirty-five musicals and received the Dramalogue Magazine Critic’s Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of Charlie Anderson in “Shenandoah.”
