Boys Track: Pioneers, Eagles shine at Regionals

Both Pioneer and Skyline are ready for the final hurdle of the season as the two teams had strong showings at last week’s Regional at Saline High School.

The D-1 state finals are Saturday, June 3 at East Kentwood High School. The gates open at 8 a.m. The field events begin at 9:30 a.m. with the 3200-meter relay getting to the starting line at 10 a.m.


The running finals begin at 1 p.m. with the awards presentation taking place at 4:30 p.m.

The Pioneers finished 11th last year at the state finals with 15.5 points. The Eagles landed in 22nd place with 10 points.

At Saline, the Pioneers finished second in the 4×800 relay as the team of Netunji Paige, Matthew Lieberman, Peter Shambaugh and Nick Foster crossed in 7 minutes, 53.87 seconds, less than 2 seconds behind Saline.

In the 100 meters, Pioneer junior Tyrique Wheatley ran first in 10.99 seconds.

The Pioneers turned the 1600 meters into a purple and white showcase as they took five of the top 10 spots in the finals. Foster finished first in 4:16.15 with Shambaugh in fourth (4:28.29), Peter Slotten in sixth (4:28.73), Zack Williston in seventh (4:31.45) and Philip Valtadoros in eighth (4:31.93).

Skyline junior Anthony Giannobile was second for the Eagles with a time of 4:17.60.

Pioneer (Lael Onifade, Travis Burke, Iosmani Frometas and Wheatley) was fourth in the 4×100 relay (44.28) with Skyline (Bola Kolawole, Alec Pinson, Myles Miller and Delante Ridley) taking fifth (44.56).

Pioneer junior Derek Yang was fifth in the 300 hurdles in 41.68.

Paige ran second for the Pioneers in the 800 meters with a time of 1:56.88. Skyline’s Jesse Edelstein was fourth in 1:57.96 Pioneer’s Shambaugh was eighth in 2:00.14.

Wheatley sprinted to second place in the 200 meters with a time of 22.49 as Lincoln’s Matthew Moore crossed first in 22.15. Huron sophomore Kyle Martin was fifth in 22.93.

Foster continued his impressive day in the 3200 meters. The Pioneer sophomore ran first in 9:22.81. Lieberman (fourth, 9:42.43), Aldo Pando-Girard (fifth, 9:45.85), John Florence (seventh, 9:50.91) and Zack Williston (10th, 9:54.38) all cracked the top 10 for the Pioneers.

Skyline junior Anthony Giannobile was sixth in 9:47.73 and teammate Justin Michele was eighth in 9:52.40.
In the 4×400 relay, Skyline’s foursome of Edelstein, Savante Daniel, Garrett Peck and Alec Pinson ran fifth in 3:31.51.

In the pole vault, Derek Yang was sixth for the Pioneers with a vault of 13-0.

Skyline senior Hunter Goodman was fourth in the discus with a toss of 144-10. Pioneer’s Aaron Fields was 10th (114-7).

In the shot put, Goodman took first place with a throw of 48-11½). Fields took seventh (42-4¾)
Pioneer junior Travis Burke was first in the long jump with a leap of 21-5¼. Huron’s Trevor Kieft was ninth (19-6 ¾).

Pioneer’s Onifade was fourth in the high jump (5-8).
