Opening Day: Gabriel Richard opens camp with big turnout

The Gabriel Richard football team took the field on Monday for the first time and feature a roster around 60 players.

That’s the good news. If you’re waiting for the bad news, you’ll have to wait.

Coach Brian Lewis has to like what he sees so far from a team with both big numbers and big talent.

Lewis has a message for his players before things got rolling on Monday.

“If you think you can do something, you probably can,” he said.

Lewis was asking which players wanted to field punts and which players could handle the duties of a long snapper. Lewis then said something that every football coach across the country will say at some point this year: “Special teams can win or lose a ball game for you.”

That’s why they are special.

And from early indications, the Irish look special. At least on the opening day.

Richard started 3-3 on the season a year ago before dropping its final three against quality opponents. It was the first time in nine seasons the Irish failed to qualify for the postseason. They look to start another streak this season.

The Irish open the season on Aug. 24 at home against Bridgeport. Kickoff is at 4 p.m.

Here are some photos from Monday’s opening day of practice.
