Opening Day: Huron begins march to the win column

The year was 2009. That was the last time the Ann Arbor Huron football team posted more wins than losses. Since then, it’s been a struggle of getting to the win column.

Three wins in 2010. Just one in 2011. Then none in 2012.

In 2013, the River Rats won their first game only to lose the next eight. They were 1-0 against Canada that year; win-less against the USA.

They won twice in 2014 before back-to-back win-less seasons in 2015 and 2016.

But on Monday, Aug. 7, 2017 there was no talk about losing or struggling or rebuilding. There was plenty of talk about fundamentals, practicing hard and positive thinking. And the Huron coaches were certainly positive as they ran the River Rats through the opening day of practice.

The coaches were stopping drills when they saw something they didn’t like, but also applauding things they did like and there appeared to be more of the later. While the lineman weren’t thrilled to be running a lap for lack of focus, they returned to the line determined to get things right.

The River Rats hope to carry that over to the playing field on Friday nights.

Huron opens the season Aug. 25 against Detroit Southeastern HS. They begin SEC league play on Sept. 8 against rival Pioneer.
