Looking back and looking ahead for the Pioneer football team.
Let’s start by looking ahead.
Pioneer completed its first week of practice today (Friday) in preparation for the season opener on Aug. 25 against Muskegon. The Big Reds, who defeated Pioneer 51-14 in last year’s season opener, reached the state championship game before losing 29-28 to Orchard Lake Saint Mary’s in the Division 3 finals at Ford Field.
Pioneer’s second game of the season will be against U-D Jesuit. The Cubs beat Pioneer 20-7 last season and reached the playoffs before losing in a pre-district game.
The Pioneers open the SEC season on Sept. 8 against Huron. Other big games on the schedule include Sept. 29 against Skyline, Oct. 6 against Saline and Oct. 20 against Ypsilanti.
The Pioneers lost to Skyline last season 21-20.
Now, a look back.
The Pioneers allowed 93 points in their first three games last season – all losses. But the defense never allowed more than 20 points in a game the rest of the season.
After starting out 1-6, the Pioneers defeated Lincoln and Ypsilanti to finish on a two-game winning streak.
Pioneer will look to get back to a winning tradition on the gridiron. The Pioneers reached the playoffs eight of nine seasons starting in 2004. It was an impressive run.
After missing the playoffs in 2013 and 2014, Pioneer reached the playoffs in 2015.
The Pioneers are coached by Bill Bellers.
