SEASON PREVIEW: Richard field hockey fields first team

Craig Flocken, who guided the Dexter field hockey program from a start-up to one of the best in the state, looks to do the same at AA Father Gabriel Richard. Flocken, who will coach the Fighting Irish during the program’s first year of varsity competition, knows there will be some hurdles to jump over and some building blocks to create.

“Since this is FGR’s first year, experience will be the biggest hurdle to overcome,” Flocken said.  “Athleticism will be the key to this initial year and how well the players adapt to the game.”

Keeping the ball out of Irish’s net will be one of the keys going forward.

“Defense and goalkeeping will be the keys to a successful opening campaign at Gabriel Richard,” Flocken said.

Top newcomers (they are ALL newcomers) include Erin Montgomery (Senior Mid), Mary Claire Zauel (Sophomore Def), Molly O’Leary (Sophomore Def),  Amber Stockinger (Senior Def),  Anna Nalukwago (junior keeper), Maddie Korte (Freshman Mid), and Jade Clasby (Junior Mid).

The Fighting Irish host West Bloomfield HS at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
