SEASON PREVIEW: Richard soccer coming off historic year

Onward and upward for the Richard soccer program.

The Fighting Irish are coming off the best season in school history. They went 18-5-2 last year to break a school record for most wins in a season. They also won their first District title since 2008.

“We are looking to build off of last season’s success,” said Coach Carlos Calderon, now in his third year as head coach.

Top returning players include Andrew O’Meara (D), Brendan Cupchak (F), Ted Ziokowski (M) and Gabe Garbarz (M).

The Fighting Irish kicked off the season this weekend at the Bartoshuk Country Day Tournament. Richard played some bigger schools like Farmington (lost 1-0) Oxford (lost in PK’s 5-3) and Grosse Pointe South (1-0).

Their first regular-season game is at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Lansing Catholic.
