The Gabriel Richard tennis team headed west on Wednesday for a dual-meet with Dexter on a perfect day – and atmosphere – for tennis. As expected, the team with high expectations and a loaded lineup defeated the younger team with no seniors looking for experience.
Richard, with 11 of the 12 players who finished 10th in the state last year back on the court, had few problems with the young Dreadnaughts, winning all but one of the matches in a 7-1 win.
Richard senior Evan Sood, who was All-State First Team in 2015 and 2016, defeated Jared Enciso 6-0, 6-0 at one singles.
Richard sophomore Ian Sood, who was a state finalist at two singles in 2016 and All-State First Team, defeated Matt Keogh 6-0, 6-0 at two singles.
At three singles, Richard’s Matt Granzotto defeated Dexter freshman Nathan Kangas 6-1, 6-0.
At four singles, Richard’s Tommy Heegan defeated Dexter freshman Ryan O’Rear 6-1, 6-0.
Richard’s one doubles team of Zach Wells and Rafid Farjo defeated Dexter’s team of Nate Kniesteadt and Jake Kapusansky 6-2, 6-1.
Richard’s two doubles team of Bryce Grover and Ben Mbengue defeated Dexter’s Dane Wiegers and Kevin Flaherty 6-1, 6-2.
At three doubles, the Richard team of Ryan Eaton and Micheal Swortzel defeated Christian Vaughan and Craig Needham 6-1, 6-0.
Dexter’s four doubles team of Bryce Martin and Simon Kim defeated Tyler Zucks and Tyler Fioritto.
