Soccer: Father Gabriel Richard falls just short in 2-1 loss

The Father Gabriel Richard soccer team hosted its Riverview Gabriel Richard on Tuesday and came up on the short end of a tough 2-1 final.

Brendan Cupchak scored for the Fighting Irish.

Richard heads to Greenhills on Thursday with a 2-5-1 record.

Despite suffering five loses, the Fighting Irish have played some good soccer and have been competitive in all of their games so far in 2017.

“We’re playing good soccer,” said Coach Carlos Calderon. “All of our games that we have lost have been by one goal except against Lansing Catholic where we lost 2-0.

“The back line has worked hard, midfield has worked hard, but our forwards are having difficulty finishing. It’s something that is being addressed and I know we’ll get things moving in a positive direction here soon.”

The Riverview Richard game was another example where the lack of finishing cost the Fighting Irish a victory.

“In terms of our game (vs. the Pioneers), I mean we had opportunities to score and we didn’t finish,” Calderon said. “They had two opportunities to finish and they did.”
