The Father Gabriel Richard girls’ cross country team placed their top five runners in the top 23 to finish in the top three at the Region 18 Division 2 race on Saturday at Lake Erie Metropark and qualify for this Saturday’s state finals.
The Fighting Irish crossed the finish line in second place with 72 points behind only Chelsea (51) and one point ahead of Dearborn Divine Child. Grosse Ile was a distant fourth (133) followed by Milan (135) and Jefferson (174) in the 12-team field.
The top three teams qualify of the state finals at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn.
Claire McNally led the way for Father Gabriel Richard. The senior hit the finish line in second place with a time of 19 minutes, 09.4 seconds. Monroe Jefferson’s Kaitlyn St. Bernard was first overall in 18:53.8.
Junior Ember Larson was 12th for FGR with a time of 19:57.2.
FGR sophomore Caroline Bodary was 19th (20:16.3), just one place ahead of senior Anna Vogel (20:17.6). Senior Dana Bodary was 22nd in 20:25.9, just one step ahead of teammate Izzie Lashaway (20:28.6), a freshman.
Senior Sarah Bindon was 32nd in 20:55.8.
The FGR boys’ team placed seventh overall with 207 points. Chelsea was first (32) followed by Divine Child (90) and Grosse Ile (105) in the 17-team field.
Senior Andy Edwards led the Fighting Irish with his 17th place finish in 17:26.3. Also running for the Fighting Irish were senior Vincent Pucillo (34th place, 18:22.7), freshman Kenny Lashaway (48th, 18:49), senior Andrew Bonar (50th, 18:51.6), freshman Joe Ghezzi (58th, 19:08.5), junior Aidan Waroway (65th, 19:23.9) and junior Joe Targett (75th, 19:46.2).
