Two young basketball teams looking to gain experience and some wins met on Wednesday night in a makeup game from last Friday. The Pioneers won their first game of the new year with a 57-35 victory over Skyline.
In a low scoring first quarter, Pioneer led 8-2 and outscored Skyline 16-8 in the second quarter for a 24-10 lead.
The offense got rolling in the second half when Pioneer scored 22 points in the third quarter to 14 for Skyline. The teams played to an 11-11 draw in the final quarter.
The win ended a three-game losing streak for Pioneer.
Asaria Turman led all scorers with 21 points. Corine Burgard added 10 and Felicia Stewart 8 for the winners.
It was the second game in two nights for the Pioneers, who fell to Southfield A&T on Tuesday 48-32.
Southfield A&T led 12-6 after the first quarter and the teams played fairly even in the second (10-10) and third (11-10 Pioneer) quarters. But Southfield pulled away with a 16-5 run in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
Turman led Pioneer with 16 points and Whitney Gallagher chipped in seven.
Pioneer travels to AA Huron on Friday for another crosstown matchup.
