Boys Basketball: Pioneers cruise past Monroe 62-32 after slow start


The Pioneer boys’ basketball team broke open a low-scoring game with an 18-7 run in the second quarter and cruised past host Monroe 62-32 in an SEC Red Division contest.

Pioneer scored just four points in the first quarter and trailed 8-4 heading into the second quarter when they switched gears. Pioneer outscored the Trojans 18-10 in the third quarter and 22-7 in the final period for the easy victory.

The Pioneers shot 21 of 50 (42 percent) from the floor but just 3 of 12 from three-point line. They made 17 of 25 free throws (68 percent).

The Pioneers outrebounded Monroe 35-25. They also had 10 team assists and 13 steals in the win.

Kasean Pryor led the Pioneers with 14 points. The junior made 5 of 15 field goals and drained all four free throws. He also grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds and five steals.

Mac VanRenterghem and Alex Cunningham each scored 10 points for the Pioneers. Jacob Williams scored nine and Drew Allen and Jack Fitzgerald each scored seven.
