Boys Basketball: Pioneers get defensive in win over Saline

The Pioneer boys’ basketball team held the Saline Hornets to a single point in the first quarter and nine for the half on their way to a 51-31 victory Friday night in an SEC Red Division showdown.

The showdown started as a slowdown as the two teams didn’t exactly light up the scoreboard. The Pioneers led 6-1 after the first quarter. Pioneer finally got the offense rolling a little in the second quarter and took a 19-9 lead into halftime.

The Pioneers kept up the strong defense in the third quarter, holding Saline to just five points while taking the lead to 30-14 after three. Pioneer outscored the Hornets 21-17 in the final quarter.

Kasean Pryor had a big game for the Pioneers. The junior made 6 of 8 field goals and hit a couple triples along with seven free throws to finish with a game-high 25 points. He also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

Pioneer outrebounded Saline 18-13.

Mac VanRenterghem had seven points, Jack Fitzgerald (four rebounds, three assists, two steals) scored five and Alex Cunningham and Jacob Williams each scored four in the win.

The Pioneers host Jackson in a non-league game on Tuesday. They play at Bedford in an SEC league game on Friday.
