The Huron boys’ basketball team warmed up for Friday’s showdown at Pioneer with an impressive victory over an always scrappy Saline team on Tuesday night. The River Rats led 19-16 in a low-scoring first half but upped the tempo and the lead to take a 33-22 lead into the final quarter.
Huron held on for a 50-40 victory and will face the Pioneers at their place at 7 p.m. on Friday night.
Senior Lewis Willis led Huron with 21 points. Senior Avery Lewis had 13 points and freshman Devin Womack scored 11 in the win.
“We really competed and played hard,” said Huron Coach Jay Shunnar. “Our seniors really came to play. We only played seven guys and didn’t really go very deep in our bench because the guys we were playing did a really good job for us.
“We opened things up with a nice run in the third quarter.”
Huron had a 28-point lead with 3 minutes left to play in the game but the Hornets kept buzzing.
“Give them credit,” Shunnar said. “Saline keeps coming at you. They always make a run no matter the score. They don’t stop playing hard until the clock hits zero.”
