Girls Basketball: Pioneer tops Pinckney, advances to District finals

 
 

On to the finals.

The Pioneer girls’ basketball team is one win from winning a District championship. The Pioneers knocked off Pinckney in Wednesday’s semifinal game 40-29 to advance to Friday’s championship game against the Dexter-Skyline winner.

Pioneer defeated Romulus 56-44 in the opening round on Monday. Friday’s finals game is at 7 p.m. at Pioneer High School.

The Pioneers won a close ballgame with the visiting Pirates. The game was tied 8-8 after one quarter and led 17-16 at halftime. The run came in the third quarter as the hosts outscored Pinckney 14-6 to take a 31-22 into the final quarter. Pioneer outscored Pinckney 9-7 in the final period.

The Pioneers won this game on the defensive end, playing terrific defense and limiting Pinckney to 29 points.

Pioneer junior Asaria Turman led all scorers with 15. She also led the club in the opening win with 23 points.

Ilena Garrett had another strong game with seven points while Felicia Stewart and Corine Burgard each scored six.
