With 3 minutes left to go in the second quarter, Skyline’s Jack Ammerman caught a long pass, pulled up just outside the three-point line and let one fly. The ball hit nothing but net and gave host Skyline a 40-20 lead over visiting Romulus in the first of two District semifinal games Wednesday at Skyline.
While on paper the game had rout written all over it, sports has a funny way of turning paper into ashes. So the Eagles came out and established control early and often, giving the other Eagles little chance to find a rhythm.
Skyline led 22-11 after one quarter and 50-25 at halftime and cruised to an easy 94-70 win over Romulus to advance to Friday’s District final at 7 p.m. Skyline will play the winner of Huron-Dexter, the other semifinal match-up on Wednesday.
The Eagles hit 13 triples on the night – they aren’t going to lose many games hitting that many three-pointers.
Brandon Wade led all scorers with 23 points. Ammerman made five three-pointers and scored 13 of his 20 points in the second quarter. Ryan Wade scored 10 of his 18 points in the first quarter. Kabir Bergin finished with eight points and DeSean Munson scored seven.
Ryan Wade and Bergin hit triples to stake the home team to an 8-1 lead. DeSean Munson had two blocks on consecutive shots at the other end as the Eagles came out flying on both ends of the floor.
Ryan Wade hit another triple and then slammed home two points to give Skyline a 15-9 lead. A triple by Brandon Wade made it 20-9 and then the senior guard knocked down a jumper in the final minute to give his team a 22-11 lead after one.
Ammerman took over in the second quarter. The senior opened things up with a triple and Brandon Wade converted a three-point play to give the Eagles a 28-11 lead.
Ryan Wade knocked down another three to push the lead to 33-15 with 5:40 to play in the first half. Ammerman hit a jumper and followed with his second triple of the quarter to give Skyline a 40-20 lead. Ammerman nailed this third triple of the quarter and Brandon Wade scored just before the buzzer to give the Eagles a 50-25 halftime lead.
Skyline led 72-49 after three quarters.
