Field set for 2018 LPGA Volvik Championship in Ann Arbor

When an LPGA Tour player wins the LPGA Volvik Championship, there’s a good chance she is going to be ranked as one of the top golfers in the world.

Shanshan Feng, last year’s champion, and Ariya Jutanugarn, the inaugural tournament champion, are among the best golfers in the world and both will return to play in the LPGA Volvik Championship at Travis Pointe Country Club, May 24-27. The field is now official, and just like 2017, the LPGA Volvik Championship will again have five of the top 10 Rolex Ranking golfers competing for the $1.3 million purse.

Feng, currently ranked second in the Rolex Ranking, is still looking for her first win of 2018.  Last year, Feng got a much-needed boost with her first victory of 2017 with the win in Ann Arbor. She set a new 72-hole tournament scoring record at 20-under par, winning by two-strokes ahead of Minjee Lee and Sung Hyun Park. Jeong Eun Lee and Lizette Salas finished tied for fourth at 17-under par. Feng, the 2008 Rookie of the Year, has won nine times on the LPGA Tour, three times in 2017.

Jutanugarn, currently number six in the Rolex Ranking, made history as the first player on the LPGA Tour to make her first three victories on the LPGA Tour in consecutive events in 2016.  She swept the entire month of May on the LPGA Tour finishing her run off with the LPGA Volvik Championship win. Jutanugarn had a 72-hole score of 15-under par, five strokes clear of her nearest competitor, Christina Kim. Jutanugarn was the first since Inbee Park in 2013 to win three consecutive events on Tour. The 2015 Rookie of the Year is also looking for her first win of 2018.  She has seven LPGA championship trophies on her mantel.

Sung Hyun Park (4), In-Kyung Kim (7) and Jessica Korda (9) are the other three players in the Top Ten of the Rolex Ranking that will compete in Ann Arbor.  Park and Korda both have won on the 2018 tour. Park won the Volunteers of America LPGA Classic in April while Korda won the LPGA Thailand in February.

Brittany Lincicome, Eun-Hee Ji, and Moriya Jutanugarn are three more 2018 LPGA champions that will play in the 144-person field here in Ann Arbor. Lincicome won the season opener, Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic, in January, Ji won the KIA Classic in March while Moriya Jutanugarn won the HUGEL-JTBC Championship in April.

For Lincicome, the 2005 Rookie of the Year, it was her eighth tour win. For Ji, the 2007 Rookie of the Year, it was her fourth title on the tour. Moriya’s win was her first, and it was the only the second time in LPGA history that siblings have won on tour. Annika and Charlotta Sorenstam were the first sisters to win on the LPGA Tour. Moriya was the 2013 Rookie of the Year.

The LPGA Tour is in Williamsburg, Virginia this week for the Kingsmill Championship. Up to 3 players can be added from the Kingsmill event and two more players will be added from the local LPGA Volvik Qualifier to be played Monday, May 21 at the Eagle Crest Golf Course in Ypsilanti.

LOCAL INTERESTS: Jennifer Song, the 2011 Rookie of the Year, was born in Ann Arbor…Ashley Kim, who just finished her freshman season for the University of Michigan Women’s Varsity Golf team, received a sponsor’s exemption.  She will be playing in her first LPGA tournament as an amateur.
