Golf: Pioneer, Skyline finish among the top 12 at D-1 State Finals

Ann Arbor landed two teams in the top dozen during the Division 1 State Finals at the Meadows Golf Course at Grand Valley State University.

Pioneer fired a first-day score of 337 and then shot a 318 to finish the two-day tournament with a team score of 655 to finish 11th overall. Skyline finished just one shot back in 12th place after shooting 335-321 for a 656.

Grosse Pointe South won the event with a pair of 299s for a first-place total of 598. Rockford was second (617) followed by Birmingham Seaholm (619), Northville (624) and Detroit Catholic Central (627).

The Eagles ended their three-year streak of finishing 10th overall at the state finals. “On a stat side note as players mentally felt they struggled with the course on Friday, the team only shot three shots worse than last year’s two day total (653 to this year’s 656),” said Skyline Coach Ashley Mantha. “It’s just a different way of getting a team score this time. We appreciated all the family and friend support.”

Grosse Pointe South’s Patrick Sullivan fired 71-72 and Northville’s Jimmy Dales fired 72-71 to tie first place with scores of 143. Rockford Kevin Healy was second with a 146. Skyline’s Shaunak Bhagat shot 80-77 for an Ann Arbor-best score of 157, one shot better than Pioneer’s Colin Flanders (158).
