Ninety-One Wolverines Named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars

The Big Ten Conference announced last month the 2017-18 Big Ten Distinguished Scholars, with 91 University of Michigan student-athletes earning recognition for their work in the classroom over the last year.

The list includes student-athletes who recorded a grade-point average of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year. The Wolverines’ list is comprised of 36 men and 55 women across 26 sports. Rowing led all programs with 11 selections.

The 91 Distinguished Scholars are the most in school history, 13 more than the previous record of 78 set last year. It is the eighth straight year U-M has increased its total: 78 in 2016-17, 66 in 2015-16, 57 in 2014-15, 55 in 2013-14, 53 in 2012-13, 49 in 2011-12 and 37 in 2010-11.

Leading the way for U-M is two-time NCAA Elite 90 Award winner, three-time Academic All-American, 2018 At-Large Academic All-American of the Year and Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient PJ Ransford (men’s swimming & diving) as well as fellow Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient and three-time Academic All-American Erin Finn(women’s track & field). Adam Coon (wrestling) was a second team Academic All-American in 2018.

Seven individuals recorded an unblemished 4.0 GPA over the last academic year: Perry Bower (rowing), Brianna Brown (women’s gymnastics), Coon (wrestling), Finn (women’s track & field), Rae Oleshansky (rowing) Ransford (men’s swimming & diving) and Amy Zhang (rowing).
