Help wanted: MHSAA in search of officials, referees

Dexter, Ann Arbor and other areas around the state are always on the look for people interested in becoming officials. And the search seems to be getting more difficult every year.

“Getting officials for high school sports is getting increasingly difficult and we need to find people who might be interested in officiating,” said Mike Bavineau, director of athletics at Dexter High School. “It is a great way to make extra money, give back to sports, and help future student-athletes enjoy the game they love.”

Bavineau and other local athletic directors are hoping to find a few good people who might be interested in becoming an MHSAA official. They can be a student, college, or adult looking to give back.

The Michigan High School Athletic Association and the Southeastern Conference will host an MHSAA Officials Recruitment Night at Lincoln High School from 7-9 p.m. on June 1.

Anyone interested – from retirees to graduating high school seniors to college students to folks looking to earn a few extra dollars – is welcome to attend. The evening will include a meet and greet with referees and umpires from every sport, breakout sessions and information on training opportunities.

Registered MHSAA officials earn $40-$60 per game and $150-$200 per tournament or invitational.

Lincoln HS is located at 7425 Willis Rd., Ypsilanti.
