Softball: Pioneers show Jackson the broom in sweep


The Pioneer varsity softball team is on a roll. The Pioneers completed their second straight sweep by brooming Jackson on Saturday.

The Pioneers won the opener 8-1 thanks to a strong start. They took the lead on a Natalie Marr single in the second inning, scoring one run. Pioneer scored three more runs in the sixth inning on a double by Ava Seldin and a single by Mimi Maixner.

Maixner earned the win for Pioneer. She threw seven innings, allowing one run, six hits, striking out six, and walking zero.
Pioneer had 14 hits in the game.

Franny Schulenberg, Maixner, Taryn Curtis, Jane Mintz and Lizzie Kuras each collected multiple hits for Pioneer. Mintz and Seldin each drove in two runs to lead Pioneers in RBI.

Defensively, Pioneer was sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error.

In the second game of the doubleheader at Jackson, Maixner threw a shutout in an 8-0 win to earn the victory. She threw seven innings, surrendering zero runs, six hits, striking out seven, and walking none.

Pioneer had 12 hits in the game.

Freshman Maxine Mucha led the team offensively with her three hits. Lizzie Kuras and Maixner each collected multiple hits for Pioneer. Ava Seldin contributed scoring three runs and having two RBI.

Pioneer had excellent defense with only one error.

Pioneer plays a doubleheader at Huron on Monday, May 1.
