Track and Field: Pioneers showcase speed at Brighton Invite


The Pioneer girls’ track & field team participated in the Brighton Bulldog Invitational on Saturday, April 29 in a non-scoring meet but one filled with plenty of competition.

The Pioneer girls finished first in several events on the cloudy, chilly day.

Tiffany Cernej-Garcia was a double-winner, winning both the long jump (16-07) and the 200 meters (25.71).

Alice Hill won the 800 (2:12.34) and Jacalyn Overdier won the 1600 (5:00.93).

In addition, three freshman/sophomore relays finished first:  4x100m (Gigi Boyd, Stefi Moreno, Derin Adunbi, Alexia Easley); 4x200m (Aida Bennouna, Triniah Johnson, Jayla Johnson, Stella Weinberg); and 4x800m (Lydia Valtadoros, Anna Vogel, Audrey Shambaugh, Carina Sanborn).

Others placing in the top six included Hailey Mayes (2nd 300m hurdles – 46.24), Triniah Johnson (2nd in 400m – 60.99), Derin Adunbi (3rd in shot put in 33’9″), Sydney Dawes (4th in 800m – 2:20.03), Vanessa Woolley (5th in pole vault – 9′), Shelby Hall (6th in 100m – 13.11), Aida Bennouna (6th in 200m – 27.64), and Lydia Valtadoros (6th in freshman 1600 – 5:51.34).

Also placing at the meet: the 4x100m relay (2nd – 51.61 – Janea Pryor, Aida Bennouna, Lakeia Harris, Tiffany cernej-Garcia); the 4x200m relay (3rd – 1:49.80 – Alexa Easter, Kim Cernej-Garcia,Shelby Hall, Hailey Mayes); and the 4x800m relay (2nd – 10:08.36 – Julia Sheehan, Victoria Roberts, Katie Riles, Sophy Cunningham).
The Pioneers run Tuesday, May 2 in Monroe.
