Golf: Pioneer’s Melendez fires 76 to finish in top 10 in state


Pioneer’s Amaya Melendez fired a second-round 76 at the Division 1 MHSAA state finals on The Meadows at Grand Valley State University and finished with a two-day score of 156.

Melendez finished tied for ninth overall in the state with Traverse City West’s Megan Jenkinson. Traverse City West’s Anika Dy led all players with a 141, shooing 69 on the opening day and then 71 on Saturday.

Pioneer’s Katy-Mina Lee, making her fourth consecutive state finals appearance, shot an 82 on the second day after her opening-round 83 for a 165 score.

Traverse City West finished with an impressive 626 for the two days, going 311 and then 315 on Saturday. Brighton was second at 648.

It was an impressive showing for the Regional teams coming from Lake Forrest Golf Club. Saline was third (649) followed by Northville (664) and Plymouth (669).

In Division 4 at Forest Akers East on the campus of Michigan State University, Greenhills fired a team score of 824 to finish in the 17th place. The scorecard reads Aarushi Ganguly (176) Euna Lee (193), Augie Guo (228), Jamie Todd (229) and Phoebe Kim (237). Ganguly improved her first-round total by six strokes while Kim bettered hers by nine strokes.

Harbor Springs won the tournament with a team score of (352-328) 680. Jackson Lumen Christi was second with a 691.

Father Gabriel Richard’s Julia Heegan fired a 94 on the first day and a 91 on the second day for a solid 185 on a tough course.
