Cross country: Three Huron runners cross finish line to state meet

 

Huron hosted the Division 1 Region 6 regionals at Willow Metropark in New Boston on Saturday and both the girls and boys teams placed fifth overall in a competitive field. The top three teams in each race qualify for Saturday’s state finals.

The top 15 individual runners also automatically qualify for the state finals, which will be at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn. Both Pioneer and Skyline will be sending their boys and girls teams to the meet.

Joining the boys’ field will be a pair of River Rats. Senior Connor Wright finished 11th overall with a time of 16 minutes, 28.7 seconds. Sophomore Karsin Dass placed 14th overall in 16:34.9.

On the girls’ side of the path, Huron junior Callie Hastie placed 11th overall in 19:10.7 and will be heading to MIS on Saturday.

The Huron boys’ team finished with 117 points to land fifth. Plymouth took first (21) with Novi second (81), Salem third (98) and Livonia Stevenson fourth (117) in the 13-team field.

After Wright and Dass, Bertrand Chu was 29th (16:53.44), James Cardwell was 31st in 16:55.17, Jack Santinga was 32nd in 16:55.57, Drake Dowdy was 48th in 17:17.58 and Marcus Martin was 69th in 18:15.56 for the River Rats.
The Huron girls finished with 176 points to land fifth overall. Northville took first place (24) followed by Salem (84), Berkley (116) and Plymouth (125) in the 14-team field.

The girls’ team featured Helena Helme (22nd place, 19:46.00), Sam Hastie (29th, 19:59.73), Kailynn Barton (45th place, 21:00.83), Zoe Solomon (69th, 22:09.88), Yasemin Gunal (77th, 22:46.10) and Maia Herrington (79th, 23:28.07).
