On Saturday, Nov. 18, 1–4 p.m., dozens of community members, friends of Dicken Woods and neighbors will work together to improve Dicken Woods Nature Area (1400 Dicken Drive) on Family Volunteer Day. Family Volunteer Day was created by Points of Light more than 25 years ago to showcase the benefits of family volunteering and provide opportunities for families to help create supportive environments for their children and each other.
Participants at Dicken Nature Area will improve trails, clean up litter and collect native seeds. Volunteers will meet at the end of Dicken Drive, off of South Maple Road. Every participant must complete a release form, and all minors should be accompanied by a guardian. Tools, snacks and know-how provided.
Family Volunteer Day, a Points of Light signature day of service, celebrates the power of families who volunteer together to support their communities and neighborhoods. For more than two decades, Family Volunteer Day has been held on the Saturday before Thanksgiving to “kick off” the holiday season with giving and service. This year Family Volunteer Day takes place on Nov. 18 and is being powered by generationOn and sponsored by Disney.
Families that volunteer together not only address community social problems, but also strengthen themselves. Volunteering together as a family provides, quality time, strengthens family communication and provides opportunities for family members to be role models. Volunteering as a family is a great way to make memories together and helps teach children the importance of giving back.
City of Ann Arbor Natural Area Preservation (NAP) works to protect and restore Ann Arbor’s natural areas and to foster an environmental ethic among its citizens. This involves conducting plant and animal inventories, ecological monitoring and stewardship projects in Ann Arbor parks. Both staff and volunteers perform these tasks.
