The Skyline girls’ basketball team ran up against a more experienced team – which is going to happen a lot this year – on Saturday and fell 44-23 to the visiting Belleville Tigers during the Ann Arbor Basketball Classic at Skyline.
The Eagles have a young team this season, with five sophomores, three freshman and no seniors on the roster.
Skyline Coach Johnnie Horne has already seen improvement from his young team which has the talent to take off at any time this season.
“We are starting to get a little tougher,” he said. “During our first couple of games I was a little worried about our toughness. The last couple games we have played a lot tougher.
“Now we have to work on execution. I thought (Saturday) we got some good shots but they wouldn’t fall. If we make a couple of those shots it’s a different game heading into the fourth quarter.”
Belleville led 12-3 in the first quarter after a slow start by the home team. The Tigers expanded the lead to 22-8 at halftime. The Eagles played much better in the second half, but Belleville still outscored Skyline 11-6 in the third and 11-9 in the final period.
Sophomore point guard Cammi Tirico led the Eagles with seven points. Freshman Lauren Courtright had four points and Renee Faulkner and Gabby Salazar each scored three for the home team.
The Eagles (0-5) host Chelsea on Tuesday.
