Boys Basketball: Pioneer tops MLK in Battle of the Counties showcase


The Pioneer boys’ basketball team defeated Detroit Martin Luther King 48-44 on Friday night in the Battle of the Counties showcase which features eight top teams from Washtenaw and Wayne counties.

The Pioneers improved to 4-1 overall and are 2-0 in the SEC Red Division.

The Pioneers led 10-3 after one quarter before MLK finally got the offense rolling and outscored Pioneer 16-8 in the second quarter to take a 19-18 lead into halftime.
Pioneer outscored MLK 10-9 in the third quarter and 20-16 in the fourth quarter.

MLK made a late push in the fourth quarter after hitting a three to cut the deficit to two points with 17 seconds left in the game. The Pioneers sealed the deal thanks to key free throws late by seniors Jacob Williams and Jack Fitzgerald.

Pioneer was led by juniors Kasean Pryor who had 15 points and 14 rebounds and Drew Lowder with 15 points. Fitzgerald added nine points in the win.

Pioneer plays at Bellville on Tuesday, Jan. 9.
