Wrestling: Father Gabriel Richard pins down a little help for second season


Father Gabriel Richard wrestling heads into its second season with a little more experience than last year and a little help from down the street. This is the first year the program will be co-oping with Whitmore Lake to help fill out and strengthen the roster.

Jess Milliman takes over as the head coach with Mickey Redmond and Matt Rushing working as assistant coaches.

Top returning players include juniors Rob Smith (215 pounds) and Ben Doneth (215) and sophomore Alejandro Rollan (189).

Top newcomers include sophomore Nate Breitner (145) along with a strong freshman class featuring Brendan Wong (103), Mark Rushing (103), Aiden Lenhardt (103) and Charlie Kalkofen (125).

“Our team strengths are dedication, youth and potential,” said Redmond, who also is the strength and conditioning coach at FGR. “We need to gain experience and the key will be not getting pinned.”

The Fighting Irish will wrestle on Wednesday at Madison Heights Madison. They also will compete on Saturday against Hillsdale at Whitmore Lake HS.
