Another reason you can feel good about yourselves Dexter: you know how to pump your own gas.
For the first time, Oregonians can now pump their own gas and they’re losing their minds.
Oregon Governor Kate Brown signed into law last year House Bill 2482 which allows motorists to pump their own gas in almost half of Oregon’s 36 counties. The new law took effect Monday.
Only two states, Oregon and New Jersey, have been the only two remaining states requiring gas station attendants to pump fuel.
House Bill 2482 would likely have gotten little attention if not for CBS affiliate, KTVL, out of Medford Oregon which asked folks to weigh in on their Facebook page.
Concerns expressed by those living in Oregon included:
“I don’t even know HOW to pump gas and I am 62, native Oregonian … I say NO THANKS! I don’t want to smell like gasoline!”
“I’ve lived in this state all my life and I REFUSE to pump my own gas. I had to do it once in California while visiting my brother and almost died doing it. This a service only qualified people should perform. I will literally park at the pump and wait until someone pumps my gas.”
“I go to work at 5 in the morning. Not a lot of people at the gas pumps at that time in the morning. And yes, I will not feel safe pumping my own gas … Not to mention it’s freezing and rainy. So thank you to all who voted to change it. You have now taken away a nice luxury that most of us enjoyed.”
“Many people are not capable of knowing how to pump gas and the hazards of not doing it correctly. Besides I don’t want to go to work smelling of gas when I get it on my hands or clothes. I agree Very bad idea.”
“Yuck! Pumping my [own] fuel in freezing temperatures and handling a nasty ole fuel nozzle that 50 other people have touched that day (and who knows what cooties are on there), no thank you. It’s nice to not have to pump your own fuel.”
Self-serve stations have been on the U.S. scene as early as 1971, which is when they began appearing in Michigan. The rest of the country lit up the internet with responses to Oregonians’ concerns about pumping their own gas.
“FEAR NOT OREGON!!!! I’ve decided to move to Oregon to open a school to teach people how to pump their own gas … I understand Oregon, adulting is hard and sometimes you [need] someone to show you how. I’m here for you.”
“I’ll never forget the first time I had to pump my own gas. I had to fight off a bear that was standing in front of the pump. Then, I endured a hail of bullets from enemy sniper fire while trying to swipe my card. When I pulled the pump handle from the docking station, it set off a series of booby traps, and the next thing I knew I was in my own version of Tomb Raider.”
“There was only one service station in the area I lived and I had to drive 25 mins to get there. Pumped my own gas my whole life and now my hands have literally melted down to my wrists. I’m typing this with my tongue.”

“At 40, I’ve never been a driver at a full service station. I can not only pump my own gas, but I can also clean my windshield (although my 7 & 9 year old constantly beg to do it).
