Hockey: Eagles riding fast start into second half of the season

The Skyline hockey team headed into the annual Dan Jilek Memorial hockey tournament skating not only with confidence but an impressive 8-2 record. The Eagles took off with a five-game winning streak before dropping their first game to Howell on Dec. 7.

The Eagles opened the year with a 10-2 win over Fenton, an 8-0 win over East Lansing and a 9-1 win over Walled Lake Western. Skyline’s offense was rolling with an incredible 27 goals in three games.

Dexter played better defense in a matchup on Nov. 22 but the Eagles still scored a 3-0 win. Sophomore Ryan Schmunk, Junior assistant captain Luke Lippert and C.J. Bahr (empty net) scored for the winners.

The Eagles then needed overtime to improve to 5-0 and beat city rival Pioneer 6-5 on Nov. 27.

Schmunk’s second goal of the game was the winner in overtime with assists from Ryan VanDiepen and Henry Hescheles.

Isaac Lippert scored twice in the win with VanDiepen and Noah Bardburn also scoring goals.

After a 7-1 loss to Howell, the Eagles bounced right back with a pair of wins over Pinckney, 8-0 and 5-1.

Skyline then defeated Bedford 4-2. After building a 2-0 first-period lead, the Kicking Mules tied things with two unanswered second-period goals. But Lippert and Schmunk scored in the third period and freshman goalie Tommy Letke earned his eighth win of the season by keeping Bedford scoreless in the final period.

Skyline headed to the holiday break with a 6-1 loss to Saline.
