Hockey: Pioneer boys team beats Royal Oak, falls to Saline


The Pioneer boys’ hockey team came up on the short stick of hard-fought league contest with a very good Saline team on Saturday. The Pioneers trailed 1-0 heading into the final period when the offenses took off. The Hornets scored four times to three for the Pioneers and skated off with a 5-3 win at the IceCube.

Pioneer took a one-goal lead in the third period before the Hornets rallied for the win.

Wyatt Bullinger scored twice for the Pioneers while Gaiden Heatly scored once. Pioneer goaltender Patrick Newton made 21 saves on 26 shots and helped keep the game close.

Last Saturday, Pioneer knocked off Royal Oak 6-2 at the annual showcase tournament held in Trenton.

Junior Jackson Robert led the Pioneer offense by posting a hat trick. Heatley scored twice and Jack Martin recorded a solo goal. Freshman goaltender Robbie Haviland turned away 11 shots as the Pioneers outshot the Ravens 39-13.
