DWC Cheri McLean’s Simple Keys For A Strong Heart

February is Heart Month and Fitness Coordinator for Dexter Wellness Center Cheri McLean shares some simple ideas to strengthen your heart.

Healthy Heart Habits

Take charge of your health to help reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke using these tips:

Talk to your doctor about your heart health

Get regular checkups—your doctor can evaluate your current heart health to develop a custom plan of diet and exercise that’s safe and effective.

Begin to exercise daily

A short exercise routine of 30 minutes per day can greatly reduce heart disease. Begin with light to moderate exercise such as walking and increase the intensity of your workout as you become stronger.

Watch what you eat

A healthy diet is critical to giving your body the fuel it needs to support your heart health. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as fish will boost good cholesterol. Berries contain phytonutrients and soluble-fiber that’s good for your heart. Eating healthy doesn’t mean you can’t treat yourself. Dark chocolate has been shown to contain compounds to reduce inflammation and lower your risk of heart disease.

Limit alcohol

Alcohol contains calories and can make it difficult to maintain healthy weight. Drink in moderation.
