Work continued on Dan Hoey Road through the weekend to repair erosive damage caused by unrestricted water flow from recent heavy rains.
Dexter City Council member Paul Cousins explained to the Dexter Forum that “there was a retention pond that had not been cleaned out for twenty-years.” He went on to explain that construction for the new elementary school included cleaning up the pond. When that was completed, water could flow unrestricted.
There were no other restrictive measures in place and Paul explained that “recent rains were more than the drain could handle so (the water) went around it” eroding the soil and collapsing the road. A steel traffic plate was put over the damaged road and repair work was scheduled.
The erosion continued however to the point where it became an emergency and traffic had to be stopped while repairs were made.
Work on the damaged road carried on into the weekend and by Sunday the road was open to thru traffic with a temporary cover for the start of the work/school week. Final touches are expected to happen Monday or Tuesday.
