Dexter Looking For Sculptures To Add As Outdoor Exhibits

Dexter has begun receiving submissions for three new outdoor sculptures.

The City of Dexter has partnered with The Arts Alliance to release the 2018-19 Dexter Art Gardens Call for Entries. The Dexter Art Gardens (DAG) is an annual temporary sculpture display, wherein sculptures are installed and displayed for one year in and around the City of Dexter.

Past entries can be seen located around town, most notably along the river walk in Mill Creek Park where you can see such familiar works as the Friendly Troll, Great Blue Heron, and Balancing Act. The sculptures are intended to add to the already enjoyable outdoor experience that residents and visitors alike enjoy as they’re shopping, catching lunch, strolling about Dexter’s historic downtown or along the river. Some sculptures have been purchased as permanent fixtures by the City.

For interested artists, application and project timeline is as follows:

  • April 1, 2018 – The deadline for submissions is April 1, 2018.
  • Week of April 15, 2018 – Artist notification of selection by email or phone.
  • June 1– June 15, 2018 – Artwork installation appointments to be made during this time.
  • May 15 – May 31, 2019 – Artwork removal appointments to be made during this time.

Artists of selected works will be paid an $800 stipend after successful installation. The sculptures will be exhibited in high visibility areas in the heart of Dexter. Artist’s name, artwork title and price will be posted with the sculpture. Works will be promoted in brochures encouraging walking tours of Dexter which will be available in print or online and distributed at Dexter Daze and Paint Dexter Plein Air Festival among other places.

For this year’s display, DAG is seeking 3 sculptures (there is no theme designated for this year). Artists interested in submitting an application for the program should do so through the CAFÉ (Call for Entry) platform at  https://www.callforentry.org/ festivals_unique_info.php?ID= 5196
