Boys swimming: Eagles take off with strong showing in D-1 prelims

And they’re off …

The Division 1 Swimming and Diving State Championships splashed off on Friday with the preliminaries on Friday at Eastern Michigan University. The finals are Saturday, March 10 also at EMU.

“It was a great day,” said Skyline Coach Maureen Isaac after her Eagles took off for what could be a state title. “So fun to see these guys put it all together. But as the great Denny Hill always said, no one has scored a point yet.”

Skyline’s medley relay team of Sam Konigsberg, Michael MacGillivray, Kyle Tschannen and Keith Kozma is seeded fifth after finishing in 1:34.66.

Ann Arbor dominated the 200 freestyle. Pioneer’s Adam Orringer-Hau took the top seed with a time of 1:39.31. Skyline’s Samuel Jyawook was third (1:40.74) and teammate Tschannen was fourth (1:40.88).

As expected, the Eagles are seeded one-two in the IM after David Cleason went 1:49.04 and teammate MacGillivray was second (1:51.47). Pioneer’s Matthew Segal is 12th seeded after his 1:55.23.

Huron senior Adam Moskus finished eighth in the prelims in the 50 free with a time of 21.31.

Orringer-Hau is seeded second in the 100 free after the senior touched in 45.43. Moskus is seeded sixth after his 46.42.

Skyline is going to rack up plenty of points in the 500 free and they’ve positioned themselves to do exactly that. Cleason is seeded second (4:33.72) and Jyawook is seeded third (4:36.69). Kozma also joins the finals after his time of 4:39.36 was good for eighth.

Pioneer’s 200 free relay team of Segal, Orringer-Hau, Trent Hitchins and Shashank Chandru is seeded seventh after their time of 1:26.70. Skyline (Kozma, Kareem El-Tawil, Jyawook and Cleason) is seeded ninth in 1:27.12.
