Inside the Schools: Pioneer Science Olympiad team heading to State Tournament


The Pioneer Science Olympiad team took first place finish at the Region 9 Regional Tournament on Saturday, March 17 at Adrian College. Pioneer beat out Saline for the top spot in what is considered one of the toughest regions in the state.

The Pioneer Olympiad team, coached by science teacher Jenni Wilkening, is heading to the 2018 State Tournament in Michigan on Saturday, April 28 at Michigan State University.

The top 60 high school and the top 60 middle school teams from the Regionals will compete for honor, personal satisfaction, and the privilege of representing Michigan at the National Tournament at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo.

It was an impressive year for the Pioneer club, which also took first place at both the Portage Northern and U-M invitationals before their regional win.

Dynamic Planet: Siri Vangavolu & Vinay Yarlagadda

Ecology: Polina Chuikov & Vinay Yarlagadda

Fermi Questions: Will Meng & Siwei Sun

Forensics: Anna Klinger & EmJ Rennich

Mousetrap Vehicle: EmJ Rennich & Owen Rennich

Optics: Sriram Garapati & Siri Vangavolu

Remote Sensing: Will Meng & Siwei Sun

Thermodynamics: Ashish Venumuddula & Manish Venumuddula; Annie Li & Will Meng

Towers: Owen Rennich & Tony Tian
