Spring Preview: Father Gabriel Richard taking a team approach in 2018

Team-oriented – Above all else, Father Gabriel Richard head softball coach, Nicole Lenhoff, can count on her girls to be team players.

“I’m very lucky I have a team that’s very team-oriented,” Lenhoff says. “They don’t think about themselves. Each kid knows their role on the team and they’re happy to do their jobs and are positive in practice.”

And, on top of that, they are talented.

The Fighting Irish will count on lone senior and Miami of Ohio commit, Julia Kennedy (3B/1B), to lead the team both on and off the field and junior Shelby Kennedy (3B), will show her power in the four-spot.

Both Kennedys are captains with excellent leadership skills.

Sophomore catcher, Julia Zucks, will be a key defensive contributor, and the middle of the diamond will be well-covered by junior, Sam Orlowski (2B), and sophomore Caroline O’Donohue (SS) who will be transitioning in from centerfield.

The team is expanding its pitching staff this year with two freshmen who will relieve Anna Timm from going into games solo, as she’s done for the past few years. Coach Lenhoff says “they’re not too far behind her,” and the three will start the season in a rotation.

Richard Softball is set to play both Class A and Class B teams this year, due to a merging of the two divisions, which will stiffen the competition.

“Our girls are excited. They know that’s how we get better is to play the better schools,” Lenhoff says. “It makes me happy to see them think that way.”
