The Pioneer boys’ varsity lacrosse team hosted Skyline on a chilly and snow flurry filled evening at Hollway Field. Senior Jack Reid continued his stellar offensive play, scoring five goals and an assist. But the big turning point of the game was a second half shutout for the Pioneer defense to lead them to an 11-6 victory over the Eagles.
Skyline scored 1:10 into the game as junior Cam Newton cut across the field and fired a shot from the far hash marks that found the back of the net. Pioneer answered back 3:15 later as senior Nathan Yuhas grabbed a pass from senior Zane Jones and tied the game.
Two scores by junior Brennan Doyle, both assisted by Yuhas gave Pioneer a two goal lead. But sophomore Issac Lippert stopped the Pioneer goal run when he rifled a goal home. Reid scored the first of his five goals when he cut from behind the goal around the near side and took a jump shot that tickled the twine.
Skyline again answered, this time with a pair of goals to tie the game: one by freshmen Kevin Nguyen and the other by Newton. The game was tied at 4-4 after one period.
Early in the second period, Reid put Pioneer ahead again with his second goal. But the lead would only last a few minutes as Newton scored his third goal. Then Skyline took the lead as Lippert scored his second goal on a man up opportunity with only nine seconds remaining in the half. Skyline led 6-5 after two periods.
Pioneer set the tone in the third quarter and the defense increased its intensity. Reid opened the second half scoring by spinning off a check, allowing him to gain position just outside of the crease and whip the ball into the netting. Senior Jack Milling followed by getting his first goal of the season, and scoring what would be the game winner. Reid had another goal to extend the lead. Then junior David Russman ended the period scoring with a blast for the far hash marks. The Pioneers led 9-6 after three.
In the fourth, Reid netted his fifth and final goal 2:57 into the quarter. Yuhas scored the final goal of the game when he snagged a pass from Reid and ripped it into the goal. The defense and junior goalie Jackson Roberts completed the second half shut out allowing only five shots on goal in the second half and solid goalkeeping.
Pioneer dominated the shots on goal with 38 shots compared to Skyline’s 17. Skyline won the faceoffs 10-9 overall, but in the second half Pioneer had 5 to Skyline’s 2. Ground balls were close, as Pioneer had 18 and Skyline 16.
