Grosse Ile traveled all the way from “the island” to take on a talented Pioneer tennis team on Thursday afternoon. The Red Devils have a long history of success on the courts but they had a longer bus ride on the way home as the Pioneers won the non-league dual-meet 7-1 with an impressive, early season showing.
The Pioneers, with an all-junior lineup, took three of the four singles events.
Meg Goldberg won 6-0, 6-2 to provide a solid win at the top of the lineup. Nikita Abbaraju won 6-4, 6-2 at two singles.
Athena Alcock lost 6-0, 6-3 to the Red Devils.
At four singles, Pioneer’s Lena Lee won 6-3, 6-4.
In the longest match of the day, Pioneer’s one doubles team of Sophie Alphonso and Hadley Huffman gutted out a big win. The seniors lost the first set 4-6 before winning a dramatic second set 7-5 and then taking the tie-breaker at 10-8.
At two doubles, juniors Riley Dickinson and Gina Liu won 6-0, 6-0.
At three doubles, juniors Sara Negren and Mary Grobosky won 6-1, 6-0.
And the No. 4 doubles team of junior Kristine Zhou and sophomore Avani Shingari won 6-1, 6-0.
