The Pioneer Men’s Varsity Lacrosse team traveled to the west side of the state to visit Rockford this past Friday. Pioneer carried play in the first quarter and the game was back and forth in the second. In the third quarter both defenses asserted themselves, but it was Rockford’s fourth quarter that secured the 9 to 5 victory, despite a multi-goal game from both senior Nate Yuhas and senior Jack Reid for Pioneer.
Reid opened the scoring for the game in the first quarter, putting Pioneer up just 2:47 into the game. Rockford came back with a goal from senior Brian Bera to tie the game. Reid again got a goal to put Pioneer up. Reid followed that up with an assist, as he arced the ball from behind the goal to senior Zane Jones, who was streaking in toward the crease and finished off the play with a blast into the net. Rockford cut into the lead as senior Cam Galvin got his first of three goals with just 23 seconds left in the quarter. The first quarter ended with a score of Pioneer 3 and Rockford 2.
Rockford tied the game a minute into the second quarter on senior Cam Kostus’s first goal of three. But Yuhas whipped a shot into the goal to put Pioneer back in the lead 51 seconds later. After three Pioneer penalties in short secession, Rockford again tied it up with Galvin’s second goal of the game. Then Rockford took their first lead of the game on a tally from junior Cam Henckel. Nate Yuhas fired in his second goal to tie the game once more. But with 2:30 left in the half Kostus scored what would end up being the game winning goal for Rockford. At the end of the second quarter it was Pioneer 5 and Rockford 6.
The game was played in the cold rain, in just above freezing temperatures. And the weather only worsened after halftime. This miserable weather, in combination with both teams’ increased intensity on defense in the second half, led to a scoreless third quarter. At the end of the third quarter it was still Pioneer 5 and Rockford 6.
The last stanza was all Rockford. Their defense completed the second half shutout of Pioneer. And the Rockford offense pulled away with three goals in the fourth quarter. Both Galvin and Kostus secured hat-tricks by scoring their third goals of the game. And senior Kevin Bieke added to the scoreboard as he slipped a shot into the Pioneer goal. The final score of the game was Pioneer 5 and Rockford 9.
One of Rockford’s biggest strengths during the game was their prowess on faceoffs. Senior Cole Scheffler won 14 of 18 faceoffs. He did this verse a Pioneer team that had won 56 percent of the faceoffs in the last two games. Rockford also had more shots on goal, firing 37 verses Pioneer’s 26. And Rockford won the ground ball battle, getting 21 to Pioneer’s 18.
Pioneer Goals: Nate Yuhas – 2, Jack Reid – 2, Zane Jones – 1
Pioneer Assists: Jack Reid – 1
