Baseball: Dreads knock off Ypsilanti, improve to 12-2 on the season

The Dexter baseball team keeps swinging a big stick as the Dreadnaughts improved to 12-2 on the season with a 16-1 win over Ypsilanti on Wednesday.

It’s been a strong start for a team loaded with experience and talent up and down the lineup.

“We are certainly off to a good start,” said Coach Mike Penn. “This is a fun group of guys to watch and certainly coach. They truly understand what it means to be an unselfish team.”

Dexter put up three runs in the first, two in the second, three in the third, five in the fourth and three in the fifth. Ypsilanti scored its lone run in the fourth.

The big bats were led by Joe Horne, Brady Rosen, Owen Huard and Hunter Christunas, all driving in runs in the fourth inning. Dexter scattered 16 hits in the game. Fiegel, Huard, Rosen and Haley all managed multiple hits for the Dreadnaughts. Fiegel led the way with three hits in four at bats.

Nathaniel Fiegel got the win for Dexter. He surrendered one run on three hits over four innings, striking out four and walking zero. Jacoby Haley threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

On Monday, the Dreadnaughts swept Ypsilanti. They won the first game 12-2 and took the nightcap 21-1 in two easy wins for the Dreads.

In the first game, Dexter scored 10 runs in the second inning led by doubles from Hunter Christunas, Nathaniel Fiegel and Reid Ladd, singles by Jacoby Haley and Joe Horne, and an error on a ball put in play by Owen Huard.

Huard, Christunas, Fiegel, Haley, Horne, and Ladd all had RBI in the second inning.

Dexter got things started in the first inning when an error scored one run.

Huard earned the victory on the pitcher’s mound. He surrendered two runs on four hits over three and two-thirds innings, striking out five and walking one. Mack Martin and Ethan Wing entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

Fiegel led Dexter with three hits in three at bats.

In the second game, Dexter scored two runs in the first inning and 19 in the second inning as the mercy rule ended the game after three innings. Drew Bielas had seven RBI on two hits, including a grand slam.

Owen Huard went 3-for-3 at the plate. Grant Stehley and Brady Rosen also had two hits.

Rose pitched three innings and allowed just one hit with five strikeouts.

Dexter hosts Adrian at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, April 27.
