Boys Track: Pioneers go the distance in win over crosstown rival Huron

 

The Pioneer boys’ track and field team hosted a couple of top SEC teams on Tuesday and ran off with a split in the tri-meet. The Pioneers fell to Saline 75-62 and defeated Huron 93-44.

The River Rats had a strong showing in the sprints. Lewis Willis took first in the 100 meters (11.01 seconds) and teammate Ashton Sanders was second (11.06) as Huron went one-two. Pioneer’s Lael Onifade was fourth (11.28) and Huron’s Ibraheem Joseph was fifth (11.34).

Willis, the fast senior, won the 200 meters in 21.94. Sanders raced second (22.30) and Onifade was fifth (22.98).

Saline took the top three spots in the 400 meters. Pioneer’s Logan Jacobs was fourth (54.97) with teammates Joel Pingle (56.21) and Adunbi Adetomiwa (57.15) fifth, sixth respectively.

Pioneer junior Nick Foster was first in the 800 meters (2:00.38) with teammate Netunji Paige in a close second (2:00.56). Huron senior Connor Wright was third in 2:00.95.

Foster returned to the winner’s circle with a win in the 1600 meters (4:24.07). Wright placed third in 4:27.57 for the River Rats. Pioneer’s Aldo Pando-Girard was fourth (4:28.06) and teammate Michael Shkolnik was fifth (4:30.98).

Pioneer showed off their strength in the distance events by taking the top six spots in the 3200 meters. Shkolnik took first in 9:48.62 followed by John Florence (9:49.71), Pando-Girard (9:51.56), Ethan Mielock (9:53.41), Owen Rennich (10:23.88) and Axel Hiney (10:53.39). Huron’s Robert Burke was ninth (11:03.25).

Pioneer sophomore Leo Gabaron won the 110 hurdles in 15.40 with teammate Derek Yang in third (16.31). Huron’s Trevor Kieft was fourth (17.54).

Gabaron also won the 300 hurdles in 41.68.  Huron’s Frank Seidl was third (43.83) and Yang was fourth for the Pioneers in 44.93.

Huron won both the 4×100 relay (44.08) and the 4×200 relay (1:32.95). Pioneer took over in the longer distances, winning both the 4×400 relay (3:31.54) and the 4×800 relay (8:05.68).

Pioneer junior Dennis Simmons was third in the shot put (43-09) and fifth in the discus (104-02.25).

Pioneer’s Lael Onifade and Jacob Williams went one-two in the high jump with Huron’s Trevor Kieft third. All jumped 5-08. Huron’s Michael Davis was fourth (5-06).

In the pole vault, Pioneer’s Derek Yang and Huron’s Denis Sorel tied for third (12).

Pioneer senior Travis Burke was second in the long jump (20-06). Teammate Logan Jacobs was fourth (18-08.75) and Huron’s Joshua Meeks was fifth (18-08.25).
