Boys Lacrosse: Pioneers fall to talented Saline 17-8

by Mark Wiseman

Pioneer Men’s Varsity Lacrosse hosted the Saline Hornets at Hollway Field Wednesday evening. Saline’s offense proved too much for Pioneer in this contest. Pioneer tried to get back into the game with a three-goal run after half time, but Saline answered with a four-goal run of their own. With 3:05 left in the fourth quarter of the game, personnel saw lightning and the officials wisely suspended the game for fan and player safety. Shortly thereafter, with no end to the lightning in sight, the match was called. Saline won by a score of 17–8.

For the first half of the first quarter, Pioneer played Saline to a stalemate, with neither team scoring. But at 6:00 even Junior Tanyr Krummenacher put Saline on the board first and broke open the scoring flood gates. Krummenacher then dished the ball to Junior Chris Peters for the score. Saline pushed it to a three-goal run when Senior Davis Bruneau scored his first of seven goals in the game. Senior Jack Reid stopped the Saline goal run and put Pioneer on the board when he worked his way between the hash marks and fired in a ten-yard strike. Saline quickly answered back, with just twenty-two seconds left in the quarter, Senior Robby Borer scored to push the Saline lead back to three. At the end of the first quarter it was Pioneer 1 and Saline 4.

In the second quarter things got worse for Pioneer as Saline continued to score, taking the goal at the end of the first and extending it to a six-goal run. Junior Goerge Gatecliff and Senior Liam Finnegan got their first goals of the game, while Bruneau put in three goals in a row, one of which was set up by a Krummenacher pass. Reid again stopped the Saline goal run with a tally of his own. But Saline answered back twenty-two seconds later when Peters took a Bruneau pass and buried it into the back of the cage. Pioneer finished the scoring in the quarter when Senior Nathan Yuhas ripped a fourteen-yard blast. At the end of the second quarter it was Pioneer 3 and Saline 10.

Pioneer started the third quarter strong with a three-goal run. Yuhas found Junior David Russman for the score. That was followed by Reid’s third goal of the game. Then Yuhas had another assist, this time finding Senior Zane Jones in scoring position. With the Jones goal, Pioneer had cut the lead to just four goals. Just as things were looking up for Pioneer, Saline came back, this time with a four-goal run. Peters scored two in a row unassisted, then Bruneau followed suit with two unassisted goals of his own. Pioneer continued to battle back. Yuhas grabbed a pass from Sophomore Nixon Holley and scored with forty-six seconds left in the quarter. At the end of the third it was Pioneer 7 and Saline 14.

The fourth quarter saw back and forth scoring. It started with a goal by Borer. Then Reid sunk his fourth and final goal of the contest. Then Bruneau answered back with his seventh. And Krummenacher had the final say as he fired home a goal with 4:16 left in the fourth. A storm had started to roll in from the distance in the fourth quarter. With 3:05 left in the fourth quarter, personnel witnessed lightning. In accordance with the rules, and with player and fan safety paramount in their mind, the officials wisely suspended the game. Shortly after the announcement was made for the players and spectators to seek shelter, the discussion was made to cancel the rest of the game. The final score was Pioneer 8 and Saline 17.

Saline outshot Pioneer 50 to 27. Saline also dominated the faceoff circle, winning 22 to Pioneer’s 6. Pioneer won the ground ball battle 27 to 27.
