Local Merchants Host Dexter Art Walk

The Dexter Art Walk opened April 28 and runs through May 19.

Dexter Community School students ranging in age from young 5’s through 12th grade are displaying their artwork in local businesses for public viewing.

This is the 15th annual Dexter Student Art Show. The Art Show was originally held at the then new Dexter High School in conjunction with the Band Extravaganza. It moved from there to Copland Auditorium to be displayed along with community stage performances.

Five years ago, the format was changed so that student works of art would be more easily accessible to the general public for a longer period of time. The students’ artwork is now displayed in businesses around Dexter and named the “Dexter Art Walk.”

Over 250 student works are on display around town. Art instructors from each Dexter Community School have selected a variety of projects from their classes to show the range of imagination, creativity, and talent their students possess.

“We are so proud of our students and the continued support of local businesses,” says Creekside Art Instructor Jane Montero.

Businesses supporting this year’s Art Walk are: Aubrees, Dexter Bakery, Dexter Creamery, Dexter Pub, Dexter Public Library (Ceramics, jewelry, & 3-D), Hackney Hardware, Hearts & Flowers, Park Avenue Salon, PNC Bank, and TCF Bank.

So as you’re out and about enjoying the mild Spring weather, think about stopping in and seeing what kids are up to these days. It’s pretty cool.
