Skyline Crew Make a Statement at Midwest Championships

Skyline Crew traveled to southeastern Ohio this weekend for the Midwest Scholastic Rowing Association Championship Regatta and proved that Skyline has what it takes. Forty-nine schools from Michigan, Ohio, Western Pennsylvania, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and West Virginia competed at the two-day event held at Dillon Lake in Zanesville, Ohio.

Skyline came away with second place in Overall Points, 2nd Place in Women’s Points, and 4th place in Men’s Points, racking up 9 Gold, 5 Silver, and 2 Bronze medals.

But the progression to the podium wasn’t straightforward. On Saturday, a late afternoon thunderstorm, including a strong flash of lightning in the very near vicinity, sent spectators, officials and athletes scurrying for cover. Especially worrisome was the fact that numerous boats were still on the water, ready to race or warming up. Skyline athletes did everyone proud, running to help not only our boats dock safely and quickly, but lending a hand to other teams as well.

At the end of the day, after the weather delay and the decision to cancel some semi-final races, 24 Skyline boats qualified for Finals races on Sunday (out of 40 Finals races), many of them as #1 or #2 seeds. The weather cooperated on Sunday morning and our crews brought it home. Five boats crossed the finish line more than 8 seconds faster than their next closest competition, with the Women’s Junior Double finishing with an incredible 25 second lead, in a six and half minute race.

Next up is the National Championship Regatta in Camden, NJ.
