Boys Lacrosse: Strong fourth quarter helps push Pioneer past St. John’s Jesuit

By Mark Wiseman

Pioneer Men’s Varsity Lacrosse welcomed the St. John’s Jesuit Titans into Hollway Field this past Wednesday. The game was back and forth throughout the first three quarters. Every time Pioneer would attempt to pull away, St. John’s would bring it back within a point. But Pioneer scored four straight goals in the opening four minutes of the fourth quarter and the Titans were never able to recover. Senior Jack Reid scored four goals and Senior Nathan Yuhas netted three goals to help drive Pioneer to the victory. Pioneer won by a final score of 10 – 6.

The Titans opened scoring in the first quarter when Junior Nathan Aloi let loose and found the back of the net. Junior Brennan Doyle answered back, coming from the near side, splitting two defenders and powering in a shot. The Titans took the lead again, with less than two minutes to go in the first, Junior Nick Cope found Junior Chandler Bankey centered in front of the crease for the score. At the end of the first quarter it was Pioneer 1 and the Titans 2.

Pioneer started off the second quarter with a two-goal run by Reid. His first goal came just 32 seconds into the period. Just over seven minutes later Reid hit the post on a shot, then collected the resulting ground ball six yards away from the cage and ripped it into the net. The Titans tied the game up again when Bankey scored his second of three goals. Reid again pulled Pioneer ahead when he took a pass from Sophomore Nixon Holley and scored. At the end of the second quarter it was Pioneer 4 and the Titans 3.

The Titans again tied the game, just a minute and eighteen seconds into the third quarter when Bankey secured the hat trick, set up by a pass from Cope. Junior David Russman took the ball from the far side of the field and launched a rocket into the cage, and Pioneer was back up by a goal. Yuhas extended the lead to two with his first goal of the game. But the Titans cut the lead back to a goal with Cope’s first of two scores.

Less than a minute into the fourth quarter Reid sent a pass from behind the goal to Yuhas who blasted in a shot from fourteen yards out. Exactly a minute later Russman got his second of the game and Pioneer pushed their lead to three. But they were not done yet. Reid scored his fourth goal, and Yuhas his third to put Pioneer up by five goals. The Titans did not give up, as Cope cut into the lead with five minutes left. But that was as close as they could get. The final score was Pioneer 10 and the Titans 6.

Pioneer had six more shots on goal, firing 39 to St. John Jesuit’s 33. Pioneer had a slim lead in faceoffs. They captured 11 faceoffs to the Titan’s 9. Pioneer also won the ground ball battle 24 to 19.
