Boys Track & Field: Pioneer runs second by one point to Saline at Regional


In a meet that went to the wire, Saline edged Pioneer by one point at Friday’s Division 1 Track and Field Regional meet. Host Saline scored 116 points to Pioneer’s 115 as the two powerhouses went toe to toe all afternoon and distanced themselves from the rest of the 15-team field.

Belleville was third (64) followed by Gibraltar Carlson (55.5), Bedford (54), Skyline (49) and Huron (47).


Hurons’ Lewis Willis sprinted to second in the 100 meters in 11.11. Pioneer’s Lael Onifade was fifth (11.42) and Skyline’s Myles Miller was eighth (11.50).

In the 200 meters, Willis ran second in 22.33.

Skyline’s Savante Daniel was fourth in the 400 meters (51.80) with Pioneer’s Logan Jacobs was seventh (53.01) and Huron’s Denis Sorel eighth (53.18).

Pioneer senior Netunji Paige won the 800 meters in 1:54.28 with Skyline’s Jesse Edelstein second (1:56.02) and Huron’s Connor Wright fourth (1:57.34).

Junior Nick Foster won the 1600 meters in 4:17.84 with Skyline’s Jesse Edelstein third (4:20.63) and Pioneer’s Zac Williston fifth (4:32.75) and teammates Philip Valtadoros seventh (4:38.05) and Drew Allen eighth (4:39.40).

Foster returned to the winner’s circle in the 3200 meters with a winning time of 9:16.60. Skyline’s Anthony Giannobile was second in 9:21.61. Pioneer grabbed the next four spots with Jack Wallace (9:27.81), John Florence (9:34.29), Aldo Pando-Girard (9:37.87) and Ethan Mielock (9:43.06).

Pioneer sophomore Leo Gabaron won the 110 hurdles (15.22) with teammate Derek Yang seventh (16.35).

Gabaron was second (40.94) in the 300 hurdles with Yang fourth (42.23). Huron’s Frank Seidle was 10th (44.09) and Skyline’s Matthew Scott was 11th (44.10).

Huron’s 4×100 relay team of Ashton Sanders, Ibraheem Joseph, Charles Ramsey and Lewis Willis was second (43.53).

Skyline’s 4×200 relay team of Myles Miller, Thomas Crawford, Savante Daniel and Wesley Brightmon was fourth in 1:31.83.

Pioneer’s 4×400 relay team of Derek Yang, Nick Foster, Netunji Paige and Travis Burke was second in 3:27.33.

Pioneer’s 4×800 relay team of Netunji Paige, Aldo Pando-Girard, John Florence and Nick Foster won in 7:51.58. Skyline’s team of Anthony Giannobile, Garrett Peck, Jesse Edelstein and Daniel Evans was third (8:01.23) and Huron’s team of James Cardwell, Robert Burke, Marcus Martin and Cionne Harris-Cassonova was fifth (8:32.72).

Pioneer’s Drew Simmons was fourth in the shot put (45-10.75). He was 12th in the discus (115).

Huron’s Trevor Kieft and Skyline’s Davion Pipkins tied for fifth in the high jump (5-11). Pioneer’s Onifade was ninth (5-08).

Pioneer’s Derek Yang was fourth in the pole vault (13) with Huron’s Denis Sorel ninth (12-06).

Huron’s Joshua Meeks was fifth in the long jump (20-10.25) with teammate Trevor Kieft seventh (19-10.25).
